Let Me Explain: MCU

Random Post Time!

The basic idea behind this is that I always end up explaining things to people (if they ask for it or not..) and I’d rather have all of my thoughts written out instead of having to go through the paces every time. So here we go…

Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)

So before I get into the bulk of the article here (which I am quickly realizing is a shitload…) I need to explain a few things.

For starters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe are only released from Marvel Studios owned by Walt Disney Studios. That’s gonna confusing to most of y’all because all of these superhero movies are starting to run together and it seems to be getting a bit overwhelming.

So as bare bones as possible; X-Men and Deadpool are owned by 20th Century Fox, the original Spider-Man movies (including the shit Amazing Spider-Man) were owned by Paramount/Sony…that’s gonna get more confusing in a bit but I’ll cross that bridge when I get there), and Superman and Batman are owned by Warner Brothers and that’s not ever Marvel you fucking pleab.

So now that we got those out of the way, I can go into the MCU.
The MCU is the reason we are seeing more and more superhero movies every year and also why all of these movies seem to be very similar and that is for two reasons.
1.) They make an absolute fuckload of money, and studios like money.
2.) They share the same setting and that means you pretty much have to see all of them.
Let me elaborate on #2.
The reason it’s called a Universe is because all of the movies are meant to share the same setting, meaning that all of the characters are aware of the actions occurring in the other movies…unless it happens in space but that’s sorta fucking obvious cause it’s not like you’re aware of what’s happening in space right now…
So without further ado, I’m gonna talk about the different movies and shows that are in the MCU and try to briefly explain how they are tied together. (Also I’m gonna do it in the order they were released instead of chronologically cause that would lose most of y’all…)

Phase One

Iron Man (2008)
Behold, you’re savior Tony Stark.

So the first movie in the MCU was Iron Man and the beginning of America’s obsession with Robert Downey Jr.

I mean we let this man go blackface in the 21st century and we nominated him for an Oscar…

So this kickstarted the whole shebangabang with the after credit scene with Samuel L. Jackson that would be the bane of every movie theater attendant for years to come.

Incredible Hulk (2008)
Oh Edward Norton…you naive fool…

Short and sweet on this one cause no one really remembers it, and that’s just the way Disney wants it…
Tony Stark shows up in the post credit scene to talk to the General about The Avengers.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Wow the more I look at this list, the more I realize that we really let Marvel slide with some shit just to get The Avengers
This doesn’t really move the universe forward too much other than introducing Scarlett Johannson’s Black Widow…
I would be that guy who just happens to walk in at the wrong time

Thor (2011)

And finally we begin to see the bigger picture…no pun intended (you know…the whole hammer thing…)
Unlike the comics, this Thor is sorta an alien, sorta a god…they kinda blur the line on this one so I’m just gonna go with a wait and see…
What ever it is, this is the first glimpse we get of what is to come in The Avengers with the Tesseract. (That blue, glowing cube thing)
Blue? Check. Glowing? Check. Cube? Check.

Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

The last movie before The Avengers, Captain America: The First Avenger is by far the worst in my opinion, mostly because it’s just boring…
We get another look at the Tesseract. (Cube from above, keep up) and we see Cap get frozen.
The Avenger (2012)
And finally we get to here and solidify the fact that we will be seeing superhero movies forever…
This sees all of the movies culminate in a nerd’s wet dream as they work together to stop an alien invasion and establish that this is how they should solve all of their problems instead of trying to handle it on their own…
This movie made so much fucking money that Marvel didn’t really know what to do with itself…
Except make a shitload more superhero stuff…AND NOW ON TV!

Phase Two

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013)
The first foray into television, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. follows Agent Colson (that guy above) as he leads a team of spies to handle all of the B level superhero stuff.
I actually really enjoy this show and just finished the third season recently…I’ll probably do a write up about it later but time to press on.
Iron Man 3 (2013)
The final movie in the Iron Man trilogy (if you don’t count Civil War), Iron Man 3 is the first movie after The Avengers where we get to see the fallout of the events of that film.
Tony Stark is having some crazy withdraws from the alien invasion and built a shitload of Iron Man suits that he ends up blowing up in the end…yeah it doesn’t really move anything forward…
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Once again, we really let them get away with anything for the sake of The Avengers…so to summarize we see another powerful object that we eventually find out is one of the Infinity Stones…I’ll explain in a bit…
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
And finally the movies start to get good again…
I’m gonna be honest, I did not expect this movie to be good…especially because the Cap’ movie was so terrible…
But holy shit is this movie incredible.
S.h.i.e.l.d. is revealed to be Hydra, Falcon/Clarence from 8 Mile is there for some reason, and we got this scene.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Jesus was 2014 a good year for Marvel…
This movie was a huge gamble for Marvel, the first movie that people really weren’t aware of the source material before it was released…
But damn if Andy Dwyer and his gang of alien misfits didn’t crush it in this movie.
This movie also set up the major conflict for the entire MCU, finally explaining what the Infinity Stones are and how Thanos (he’s a big purple alien who wants everyone dead) is going to collect them and bring a shit storm to Earth that the Avengers have to deal with…
But seriously this movie is golden…
Agent Carter (2015)
To be honest, I almost forgot this show existed…
My bad…

I have never watched this show, but I heard it was awesome (sadly it’s already been canceled)

So I’m not gonna go into any detail really other than it follows Captain America’s love interest Hailey Carter as the founder of S.h.i.e.l.d.

Daredevil (2015)

Already did a write up on this one, but it was the first Netflix series Marvel put out and allowed for them to be a little edgier and more mature than anything else on this list.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
So this movie is really just filler…
Not much really happens, two new characters are introduce (well three but he dies so…), and the characters really don’t have any sort of development…
But the action scenes were cool!
Jessica Jones (2015)
Following on the heels of Daredevil, Jessica Jones was a gamble by Marvel similar to Guardians of the Galaxy because not a lot of viewers were familiar with her comics before the show’s release…
But once again they came through and made an incredible series that dealt more with the psychological affects of what living in a world with super powered people would be like…
Also this man fucking crushed it and deserves some credit…

Ant-Man (2015)
This movie was just proof that Marvel could get away with anything and that America loves Paul Rudd…

Phase Three

Captain America: Civil War (2016)
And now we are up to date.
I’m gonna do an entire separate post on this movie because honestly…it was fucking awesome…
What’s next?

None of this is coming to an end anytime soon so I’ll do my best to summarize what to expect next…
Doctor Strange (2016)
No GIFs for this yet…but there is a trailer!
Alright I’m getting lazy so RAPID FIRE ROUND!!
Spider-Man is back with Marvel and will get his own movie in 2017
Luke Cage will be the next Netflix series, followed by Iron Fist and The Defenders (Netflix equivalent of The Avengers)
Black Panther will get his own film in 2018 after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok

Alright guys, this was by far the longest post I’ve ever done and I’m running out of steam, but if I missed anything just let me know and I hope you enjoyed.
